The Call to "Follow Me"

Three people called

A scribe (perspective disciple) (v.19-20)

Someone eager to follow Jesus

I will go with you anywhere

Jesus responds with an illustration

Foxes have holes

Foxes have a place to call home

Birds have nests

Birds have a place to call home

The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head

Jesus has nowhere to call home

What was Jesus getting at with this perspective follower?

He wanted the comforts of this life more then he wanted to follow Jesus

A current disciple (unknown person, not one of the 12) (v.21-22)

Someone who already was following Jesus

Let me go and bury my father

Jesus responds

Let the dead to bury their own dead you follow me

What was Jesus getting at with this follower?

He wanted material things more than he wanted to follow Jesus.

Matthew (One of the 12) (v9:9)

Jesus call a man named Matthew

He was a tax collector

Matthews response

He rose and followed Jesus

What was different about these three people?

One was a scribe (religious leader)

One was already following Christ

One was a person everyone hated, a tax collector.

What was different about the calls?

One said he would follow everywhere but there was no followthrough

One was already following and want to leave to get his inheritance

The most unlikely to follow Jesus, Jesus called. He was the only one that was pursued by Jesus; the others reached out to him.

We only know of one of the three that follow Jesus.

Which person are you?

Do you want to follow Jesus everywhere he goes but are unwilling to give up the comforters of your life to actually follow him?

Do you want to follow Jesus but are too focused on material and temporal things?

When Jesus calls you are you willing to drop everything to follow him? The comfort of your life, the materials of this life. Are you willing to give it all up to follow him?
